The Sport Field Strategy is coming back to Park Board on Monday, June 10th. Staff are seeking support for a number of key recommendations, including one that would convert all gravel fields to synthetic turf fields at Oak, Killarney and Beaconsfield Parks. Interested speakers have until noon on Monday, June 10th to sign up (the meeting has a 6:30pm start at 2099 Beach Avenue).
The recommendations by staff include:
- the renewal of all existing synthetic turf fields (7 out of 12 fields are behind schedule for renewal in 5 parks)
- converting all gravel fields to synthetic fields (Oak, Killarney, Beaconsfield); potentially also converting John Hendry Park gravel fields)
- dedicate parks for ball diamond and rectangular fields
- make sport-specific ‘priority fields’
- create hub sites (Killarney Park, John Hendry Park, potential Churchill School sites)
Currently there are a total of 267 sport fields in Vancouver (151 rectangular fields and 116 ball diamonds in 79 parks). Staff are continuing their push for additional artificial turf fields. There are many disadvantages of artificial turf fields and these come at a high ecological cost; please see the following posts for more details:
- Protect Vancouver’s grass sports fields from becoming synthetic turf, says ‘Save Our Neighbourhood Parks’ group.
- Lead confirmed on Vancouver synthetic turf playing fields: Moratorium sought
Apart from the Sport Field Strategy, there will be an update related to the Stanley Park Train at the meeting. Unfortunately there is no staff report published yet on the Stanley Park Train, nor is there any information about the General Managers report. Both reports will likely be presented live at the meeting on Monday night.
