The Burrard Bridge is undergoing extensive repairs. However, the details about why the urgent repairs are needed have been shrouded in secrecy.
Investigative journalist Bob Mackin received a heavily redacted response to a Freedom of Information request about the status of the Burrard Bridge. The bridge was built in 1932 and Mackin notes that it is visibly crumbling and rusting. Further details are available in the following post: Burrard Bridge’s safety secrecy.
News recently broke that Vancouver has again been ranked as the most congested Canadian city during rush hour. The Burrard Bridge and other bridges are key bottlenecks to traffic. GPS navigation firm TomTom released their Congestion index for rush hour traffic.
Vancouver was ranked at the most congested city in Canada and the second most congested city in North America (just behind Los Angeles). Further details are in the following article published by The Province: Gridlock! Vancouver has the worst congestion in Canada, and sneaking down secondary roads will only make it worse: Study (June 3, 2014, Gordon McIntyre). We’ll caution that there’s been controversy in the methodology behind the TomTom congestion index, and also note that it is for Metro Vancouver.
