Former City Orchard lot at 1500 Main Street for Lease. Could it be used for other purposes for public benefit?

Earlier this year, the City of Vancouver spent $220,000 to relocate an urban orchard from 1500 Main Street. This lot has been completely empty since the end of March. Recently a couple of For Lease signs were posted on the property and this lot has been listed as a rental site on the City’s website. There is barbed wire fencing around the perimeter of the property and several “No Trespassing Private Property” signs are posted. Could there be other opportunities for this site?

It’s worth noting that next to the property and directly to the north of 1500 Main Street, there is a Temporary Modular Housing complex at 220 Terminal. Could this site be used for additional Temporary Modular Housing? Could it house Community gardens? Or would it be possible to open this the publicly owned space for public uses?

  1. It should be! It would be an excellent site for more social city housing and the sooner work is started on that the better! leaving City owned land empty when there is a housing crisis, when we have hundreds of people living in parks, just makes no sense!
