Pilot for alcohol consumption in 10 select parks at July 6th meeting

The Park Board agenda for July 6th includes a proposed pilot project to temporarily permit liquor consumption in select parks. If approved, the pilot would run until October 12, 2020 and allow for alcohol consumption between 11am and 9pm.

Dude Chilling (Guelph) Park was not selected for the pilot project

Designated areas in 10 parks have been identified for drinking (see map in the report). The 10 parks are Fraser River, John Hendry (Trout Lake), Harbour Green, Locarno Beach, Memorial South, New Brighton, Queen Elizabeth, Quilchena, Stanley and Vanier Park. The selected parks all have washrooms.

Speakers who would like to call in and address the Board have until noon of July 6th to sign up; the meeting will begin at 6:30pm.

The staff report is targeting a mid-July implementation of this pilot project, contingent upon approval by the Province. Of course, there’s the open question of whether the pilot project will change unsanctioned alcohol consumption habits in other parks and in areas outside of the designed zones in the selected parks.

The Park Board agenda also contains the General Manager’s Report along with updates related to the pandemic and the reopening schedule.
