Heritage policies and practice. Case study: An old house falls into disrepair

14th and Sophia

How much heritage in Vancouver is threatened by neglect? The house pictured above was built in 1910 and it is not listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register. The City does not consider it to be heritage.

The photos here are for the record. While there is still a chance that this corner house can be saved (at East 14th and Prince Edward), the condition of the building has steadily deteriorated over the last few years. How many other old buildings in the City are in a similar condition? What is the likely fate of this old house and others like it in Vancouver?

  1. I am sick and tired of owners letting an old house or property run down to look like an eyesore so that everyone in the neighbourhood is grateful when it is torn down. There should be a standard of care enforced by the city so that buildings / property don’t get to this point. It is pretty sneaky of the owner to get “his way” to build new and make lots of money.
