City Council Dec 9-10th: 2016 Budget, Elected Officials’ Compensation, Tenant Relocation Guidelines, Bike Lanes and more

2016 BudgetThe main item to be discussed at the Council meetings on December 9th and 10th is the 2016 Budget.

City Council will be voting on whether to give themselves a raise, as outlined in a staff report ($3804 for a Councillor up from a from a base $68,552). The remuneration for the now ‘permanent’ Deputy Mayor position would be increased by means of an additional $34,236 supplement. Some of the Councillors have additional income as a result of their appointments to Metro Vancouver Board. A raise for Park Board Commissioners will also be discussed ($2640, $3300 for Chair); currently Commissioners earn $8000 a year (or $10,000 for the Chair).

Recommendations for additional protections for renters will be examined. A number of new bike lanes are proposed in Vancouver over the next 5 years; these new lanes are mostly centred around the downtown core area (notable exceptions are Commercial Drive and Hudson). A number of upgrades to existing routes are also proposed. Skateboards might also be permitted in bike lanes during a proposed one-year pilot project. An update on the Chinese Society Building Matching Grant Program will be provided.

Park Board held a special meeting on Tuesday, December 8th to discuss the 2016 Budget and changes in fees and charges (more details in our previous post on the Vancouver 2016 budget).

For reference, we’ve reproduced the meeting agendas below:
