Week in civic affairs preview: Viaducts, Taxi Service Review, Expo 86 Anniversary, Love Locks, Public Hearing and more

Viaducts trafficIn a very busy week, Vancouver City Council will review the report that recommends the removal of the viaducts on October 20th and 21st. As well, Council will consider 13 items at a Public Hearing on the night of Tuesday, October 22nd. Park Board will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, October 23rd, which is a departure from the usual Monday night timeframe.

The Regular Council meeting on October 20th will include presentations on a Taxi Service Review. This report may put in motion a series of events to allow ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft to operate in Vancouver. Speakers to the item will be heard on October 29th at a subsequent Committee Meeting. Motions on notice include items to Exempt City Staff Severance Provisions (DeGenova), a 30th Anniversary of Expo 86 celebration (Affleck), and Aligning Wine Stores Regulations with Provincial Regulations (Affleck).

The Public Hearing for October 20th has 13 items and is set for a 6pm start. The bylaw changes under consideration include the rezoning of 2312-2328 Galt Street (Norquay Apartment Transition Zone), 3063-3091 West Broadway (70′ tall, 70 for-profit rental units), 26 East 1st Avenue (height increase to 18 storeys), 1768 Cook Street (201 West 2nd Avenue, 270 units, FSR calculation change), and 4172-4188 Cambie Street (a 6-storey building).

Speakers who wish to comment on the plan to remove the viaducts will be heard at a City Finance and Services committee on Wednesday, October 21. This meeting will start at 2pm (and not the usual 9:30am). Overflow speakers will be heard at a subsequent meeting set for Tuesday, October 27th (4pm).

Park Board meeting on Wednesday instead of the usual Monday night (it was likely rescheduled due to the federal election). The study on the ‘love locks’ will recommend QE Park as the most preferred location for a new sculpture. A Water Conservation motion on notice will be introduced along with a motion calling for more bike parking downtown.
