Should there be more shared pathways for pedestrians & cyclists in Vancouver?

Clark and 6th Shared PathwayHere’s a little food for thought: Should the City of Vancouver have more shared pathways for pedestrians and cyclists? The photo above is an example of a shared pathway located at Clark Drive and East 6th Avenue.

Cyclists occasionally take to the sidewalks along very busy streets when there are low pedestrian volumes. We suspect the reason is primarily for safety (cyclists don’t feel safe riding on streets with very heavy volumes and large vehicles). One of the possible solutions is to include more shared cyclist and pedestrian pathways along busy arterials (this may include widening sidewalks for this purpose). It’s a practice  common in European cities.
