On Monday, April 27th, Park Board will review a staff report that examines adding a new zipline to QE Park. The proposed zipline would cover a distance of 190 metres and be in operation between late May and September in 2015 as a pilot project. An existing zipline operator, Greenheart approached Park Board with a proposal that includes a revenue sharing model; rides would cost in the $15 to $20 range. The report states that the sound generated by the line is under 50 decibels.
A new skateboard facility is proposed for Jonathan Rogers Park (staff have updated their previous report from February 2, 2015). The staff report also recommends that the board consider three options with respect to the existing skateboard facility in Mount Pleasant Park:
- Option 1 – Convert the Mount Pleasant Park skateboarding facility for beginner skateboarding use;
- Option 2 – Remove this facility and convert it to a grass lawn;
- Option 3 – Remove this facility and engage with local residents to determine a more appropriate use for the area.
The Vancouver Recreational Water Quality motion on notice by Commissioner Wiebe seeks to work with other agencies to “achieve a goal of zero beach and recreational water closures in the City of Vancouver.” It’s worth noting that there have been a number of high profile beach closures in recent years including closures at Sunset Beach (in 2014) and at Trout Lake (in 2011 and 2012).
There is a motion on notice on the topic of Cherry Groves put forward by Commissioner Coupar. Events such as the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival highlight the interest in ornamental flowering trees around the City. There has been a decrease in flowering trees in the cherry family in the Vancouver tree inventory (from 36 percent in 1990 to 22 percent at present). The motion seeks to instruct staff to identify new locations to plant cherry trees and to reverse this trend.
Members of the public can sign up to speak anytime prior to noon on April 27th on the zipline or skateboard facility staff reports (note: the water quality and cherry tree motions may be referred to a subsequent meeting in order to hear from speakers). The meeting is scheduled to take place at 2099 Beach Avenue; however, future meetings of the board may alternate at different venues throughout the City.
