Here’s what the City says: Help shape the 2013 City Budget
Tell us what’s important to you. Take the survey. The intent for the 2013 budget is to use a responsible and balanced approach that maintains a focus on the long term. The City will align spending with Council’s and residents’ priorities to provide services that Vancouverites value and deliver them as efficiently as possible.
Here’s what CityHallWatch says: Opposition councillors on City Council have complained about the lack of detailed budget information. The public needs to have a more systematic, comprehensive and independent review of Vancouver’s civic finances. Various organizations are concerned about the finances and taxes, but a more coordinated civic response is needed. The BC government is still working on creating the office of an Auditor General for Local Government to review budget efficiency of municipal governments. CityHallWatch has found that though work is proceeding, there is no clear timeline yet for creation of this office.
- Read The Province editorial about Vision budget secrecy.
- Read good news about Standard and Poor’s giving Vancouver a good rating for “debt reduction, budget and financial reporting.” (Interesting contradiction between S&P’s experience with that of some councillors and citizens — but perhaps the difference is in the process of decision-making versus what is printed in reports read by Standard and Poor’s. More review required to make sense of that.)
- Read the Auditor General for Local Government Act.
